Sun Postal 4 v 2 Wodson Park

Another away performance to forget. Two weeks after slipping up at Berkhampsted, Wodson crashed to another away defeat against Sun Postal. The visitors started brightly enough but George Friends missed header aloud the centre forward to find the net via the post giving the Posties a deserved lead. This was soon doubled before half time and the advantage extended immediately after half time as the Postie forward nodded a third past the on rushing Craig Walker. Steve Horsey reduced the deficit and Joe Collins sublimely finished a wonderful move to set up a grand finale. The equaliser never came although a number of chances went begging and to rub salt in Wodson’s wounds the game was put to bed with the final kick of the game as a breakaway goal sealed the victory for the home side with Wodson over committed. Wodson had only previously visited in a reserve capacity and had managed two wins from two on their previous visits. They were on a high after a solid start to the season but this was a chance to show how far they had come. They started brightly enough. Wodson criss-crossed the pitch with their crisp passing, barely giving the home side a look-in during the opening exchanges and it all looked promising for the away side.

Pete Sawyer should have hammered home Wodson’s early superiority when he found space at the far post to meet Tyler Hatherly’s right-wing corner. The young midfielder has three goals to his name already this term but misjudged his header, sending it a foot over the bar. Within seven minutes, Wodson would rue that squandered chance. That’s how long it took the Posties to get their noses in front and they needed a big slice of luck. A cross field ball was missed by George friend as the winger climbed highest to loop a header towards the far post and watch it nodded home across goal against the post and in. It was tough on Wodson, who had been pretty comfortable without actually troubling the home goal. Now they would have to overcome a home side happy to play on the counter-attack.It proved a difficult trick to pull off. Matthew Taylor pushed up to support Steve Horsey but, all too often, promising moves shuddered to a halt on the edge of the opposing penalty area. Indeed, the hosts had moments of their own on the break as crosses evaded on rushing forwards on numerous occasions.

Finding themselves 3-0 down with half an hour left Wodson needed a bit more guile and a bit more thrust in the final third. Enter Joe Collins. The flamboyant midfielder replaced Jack Friend in the second half and immediately brought more flow to the visitors’ attacks. The chances stacked up. Collins himself completing a wonderful move to bring the score line back to 3-2. He saw a volley deflect wide and Pete sawyer was denied by a last-ditch challenge from the keeper after bursting into the box on the left-hand side. Matthew Taylor met Tyler Hatherly’s corner with a diving header only to se it parried.Sun Postals back door was creaking and Wodson were desperate for the equaliser. It was clear the game would end 3-3 or 4-2 and when the goal came it was in the favour of the home side on a counter attack with the last kick of the game but in truth the damage had already been done in the first half.
